So Long...Farewell

It is with sadness that we must say goodbye today to our wonderful Year 6 class. They have been model pupils who have worked hard to do exceptionally well in the KS2 SATs. They have performed superbly in their studies and under the guidance of Mr Hampson they have matured and taken many a lead role in school. We wish them good luck for the future and hope they all achieve their goals. They have been a credit to the school, to Mr Hampson, their parents and themselves. Congratulations and Well Done Year 6!

A mention also to Greggs ( baker) for providing cakes for our leavers party and for supporting Breakfast Club this year.....we are very grateful - Thanks so much!

Mrs Bovill is also leaving us, she is moving south to Portsmouth with her husband Chris and son Freddie. Mrs Bovill has worked hard with our Year 4 class since November 2009, and has taken the class through some exciting work on E- twinning and the study of Turkey. She has attended many sporting events ...we will miss her greatly in September. We thank her for all she has done, and for all her hard work and dedication and wish her good luck in her new venture.

The humour and modern touches enabled us to experience a highly visual, physical theatre with fun and enthusiasm. The production was followed by a workshop that explored the themes and some of the language of the play. Our thanks to Mr Crosland and all at Whickham for enabling us to participate in this event. A good time was had by all! Photographs are on our website gallery, click here.

Our trip to Beamish Hall in Durham to see the wild birds of prey family was organised by Miss Scott. The children had a fabulous time in the woodland setting and saw birds in comfortable habitats. Hawks, owls and falcons were on show and children saw and interacted with cute baby owls. A flight presentation gave us an insight to the ability of the birds. Although the rope course and playground were out of bounds that day due to bad weather, it did not stop us having a super time! This was an educational, inspired, experience that will never be forgotten. (Benjamin)

Whickham Library
We have enjoyed 2 visits to our local library this year, where we learned more about the library system and borrowed books on our school ticket. As well as participating in some literary activities we were lucky enough to be given a tour, including the back rooms!

Alnwick Gardens
The whole school visited Alnwick Gardens and had a wonderful day and year 6 were no exception. We had a great time visiting the different areas of the garden with the particular favourites being the Grand Cascade, Serpent Gardens (resulting in a few wet children!) and the rope bridges in the Treehouse (Mrs Fife was NOT scared!)

Mini Olympics

Whickham school hosted the mini olympics on July the 1st. This involved year 6 children from cluster primary schools participating in small games events. Although we didn't win medals we had a fabulous afternoon and have lots of good memories. Sun, rain, thunder and lightning did not dampen our spirits or stop us from being good sportsmen. Thankyou to Mr Hampson and Mrs. Anderson for accompanying us and to Mr McCaughty and his team of sports leaders at Whickham. From all of year 6.

Alien Day

Swalwell Primary School pupils got quite a shock when they walked into the school yard and discovered a police car waiting in the yard for them!
Pupils speculated wildly on the cause of this, but suspicions were confirmed when they entered their classrooms and were confronted by their grim teachers and a policeman, explaining the situation - ALIENS HAD INVADED DURING THE NIGHT!
It was revealed by the site manager, Mr. Fitzpatrick, that he had seen great balls of fire erupting from the school field late at night after locking the school up. All children were led up to the field and were greeted by an amazing site - a large, burnt crop circle in the middle of the grass, with a space shuttle like object placed in the middle. Police had marked the area off, and all pupils were extremely cautious, especially the forensics who had to actually touch the evidence - e.g.; pieces of skin, metal from the shuttle.
In school, many strange things had happened. In Nursery, a blue foot was found in the sandpit! A glowing egg was found in Year 3, and in Reception/Year 1 a hand was discovered! (Maybe the aliens took part in an amputation).
It soon became apparent that this was a hoax, but not before children had produced high-quality, high-tech work on the mysterious events of the day.

Click the news section and see photographic evidence in our gallery.

Fairtrade Friday

Wouldn't you like to attend a school that sells Fairtrade bars? By doing this we are helping poorer countries to make a good living. The fairtrade bars are sold in school for 37p each by children in the Year 6 class. All pupils are encouraged to buy these bars at break time on Friday mornings. The sales were turned into real life mathematics problems in the classroom. One of these sessions was recorded and shown on Teachers TV for the Raising Aspirations program.

Year 6 arrived at Kingswood at 11am for a full pack day of activites. After some tasty lunch the children got changed into safety gear. Strapped from head to toe the children set off to abseil down a 20ft wall. All the children were very brave and completed the task without any hesitation.
After a quick juice break both groups had to put their heads together in order to build a 6ft stand from lego which could balance 5 welllington boots.
In the evening children enjoyed sipping on some hot choco whilst singing some camp fire songs.
Finally the children got dressed for bed and were ready to keep Mrs Lancastle-Smith and Miss Busby up to 4am!

Georgia O'Keefe Artwork
Using digital images taken during our visit to Alnwick Gardens, we recreated flowers in the style of Georgia O' Keefe. To allow us to enlarge one area of a flower we made a frame and then used a grid to help us to use relative proportion.

Benjamin and Dale.JPG

Greenhouses
We designed and made a greenhouse structure to enable our sunflower seeds to grow successfully. Working as part of a small team, we produced several design ideas, including step by step lists of what needed to be done and resources to be used. Then we measured accurately, used vices and saws and eventually glued the structure together, after adding the transparent plastic they were successfully completed.

We have been working on solving problems that can arise between friends. We made a friendship web and talked about what happens when a link is broken and who this can affect.

Our class looked at how we can help to sort issues between people as mediators without taking sides.

Science

In Year 3/2 science we have been focusing on practical investigations.

We are starting to make our own questions to be investigated, for example, what material is best for keeping beans warmer for longer? and what is the best material for keeping my hot water bottle warmer through the night?

When we have made our questions we predict what we think will happen; make an equipment list and write a method.

After this we conduct our experiment ourselves or with our group. This is great fun. We have to get all our equipment and set it up before we can start our investigation.

science.jpg

While we are doing our investigation we have to take measurements and record them.

At the end we look at our results and draw a conclusion to see if we have answered the question we set.

We have also investigated shadows and if the shadow changes if it is closer to a light source and thermal insulation - will an ice cube melt quicker if it is wearing a coat.

Check out our science photos in the Gallery!

Numeracy

We have used practical maths to help us this year to help us with our numeracy.

numeracy.jpg

We use giant chalk number lines to help us with addition and subtraction of any small number and to help us recognise of multiples of 2, 3, 5 and 10.

We made fraction pizzas to see the link between equivalent fractions.

Year 3/2 also made a visual timetable of their day from waking up to going to bed with digital and analogue times on them.

We went on a right angle hunt round our classroom and our new and improved playground.

Check out our Gallery to see more photos!

Raising Aspirations
