This afternoon ( Wednesday 8th February 2012), at 2.45pm we all took part in a sponsored World Record Breaking attempt to raise funds for a national charity- SignHealth.
All children, staff and some parents/carers sang and signed to a new song called 'We sign to sing' . A small donation was suggested and any money raised will go towards improving the health and well-being of deaf people.
This was a great opportunity for pupils to practice a valuable skill, as well as raising awareness of deaf issues.

KS2 'Rocking all over the World'

KS2 children looked at how musical styles around the world have been influenced by the rock and pop music that came out of the U.S.A and the U.K in the 50's and 60's.
George, Keren, Giles and Tony from Gateshead Music Services taught the children about different musical styles and the countries they came from.
The workshop began with' We Will Rock You,' a rock song transformed rhythmically and melodically with a punjabi 'bhangra ' style beat.
Children then sang and played percussion instruments to African rhythms.
A Mexican cha cha cha style song in nine sections was introduced , this was quickly followed with a Spanish Flamenco.
An international flavour of pop music was illustrated with a Bruno Mars song in reggae style.
Calypso and gypsy music was enjoyed before the workshop finished with an appropriately titled Status Quo song..' Rockin all over the World!'
Our thanks to Gateshead Music Services for a fantastic, fun and valuable morning.

National Storytelling Week

National Storytelling Week is a week aimed at promoting the art of storytelling which is the oldest of the communicative arts. The week is aimed at increasing awareness of the art, practice and value of oral storytelling .
We have had a truly inspiring morning...In preparation for National Storytelling Week, all teachers planned, prepared and told stories to children from Nursery to Year 6. Some teachers used puppets, others dressed appropriately for the part, one teacher took advantage of the outdoors and told her story to children sitting around the campfire!
There was something to suit all tastes, from ghost stories to humourous tales , we catered for everyone!
The excitement in Swalwell School was summed up by a Reception child.."The morning flies by when you're having fun!" said Logan.

Sign2Sing

As a school we have decided, once again, to take part in Sign2Sing. This is a World Record breaking attempt for the most people signing, in British Sign Language, the same song at the same time.
The attempt will be on Wednesday 8th February 2012 at 2:45pm.
We think this is a terrific initiative which will teach the children a new and valuable skill as well as raising awareness of deaf issues.
SignHealth, who are a national charity, dedicated to improving healthcare and achieving equal access for deaf people, are behind the event. They are hoping to raise some much needed funds to enable them to continue their valuable work. To achieve this they are asking for a suggested voluntary donation of £1.00 per child taking part. They do , however , want this to be as inclusive as possible, so any donation, however small, would be greatly appreciated. All Swalwell children will be allowed to participate whether a donation is received or not.

Stranger Danger

Stranger Danger is a magic show designed to teach children about the danger of strangers and what to do if approached by one. It is not just about teaching children who or what to avoid but also includes positive rules so that children know how to keep themselves safe.
On Monday 9th January, our children laughed and had fun whilst learning about how to keep safe. They now have an awareness of what it means for someone to be a stranger and to understand why they should not trust them.

Tibetan Monks - Young Reporters this week...

Mrs Anderson took some Year 5 children to The Sage in Gateshead where monks from Tashi Lhunpo presented a workshop of dance, music and chanted prayer.
Faith, Abigail and Antony were all agreed that the workshop had given them an insight into the monks way of life.
The children will soon be sharing their knowledge with other pupils in a celebration assembly. They are our young reporters this week and were delighted to be able to write and publish their comments on the website.

Our Young Reporters this week are...
Faith, Abigail and Antony

At The Sage I learnt hand gestures that the monks use in prayer. The gestures represent : water for drinking , water for washing, offerings of perfume, music, cake, light, flowers and incense. This morning was great because I got to watch the monks dance and then I got to learn the dance steps afterwards.
Written by Antony

When I went to the Sage seven monks did a dance. The dance was about defeating all of the bad spirits to welcome in the New Year. The thing I loved the most was the drum because it was nice and loud and kept the rhythm of the chants. The monks wear hats which are for wisdom, power and kindness. They also wear a skirt, top and shawl.
Written by Faith

When I was at The Sage seeing the TIbetan Monks I learnt how to do one of their prayers using hand movements. I enjoyed seeing the monks perform a chant , a dance and music. I thought the monks were fantastic - they have to learn so many different prayers and dances. It takes them at least 10-20 years to learn the prayers. I now know that Tibet is a very big country with large mountains, the highest is Mount Everest. They are a religious country. It is said the mountains are where heaven meets the earth!
My best bit was blowing in the long horn because I was able to make a sound out of it .

...Matthew Graham and Jordan Jeffrey
We are members of the school council and we were chosen to go to a conference up at Whickham School with councillors from other primary schools.
The conference was about moving to Whickham School (transition).
Each school sent two children to represent their primary school.
We met and talked about what we want when we go to Whickham on taster day.
We suggested having two taster days and talked about wanting buddies from Whickham to show us around on the first day to keep an eye on us and help us make friends.
We were given notebooks and pens we found out about how many people go to Whickham ,how to raise money and a little bit about university, college and good exam results.
We made notes so that we can tell people in our school about it.
We thought it was really good and we were very proud and happy we were listened to .

Disney Music Workshop

All our classes participated in a fantastic music workshop when musicians from Gateshead Music Services visited Swalwell. The workshop focussed on the music of Disney and we found out about the musicians and songwriters behind many famous films from the early "Tin Pan" era of Disney Studios to the huge blockbusters we enjoy watching today.
We had a great time singing along with many familiar songs, and even joining in the odd dance or two! We had a wonderful morning and lots of us were singing the songs all day!
Thank you to the musicians who played the electric keyboard, drums, piano, guitar and trumpet and to the singers who entertained us so well...We can't wait for the next Music Workshop!

World Class Duo Entertain Swalwell Pupils

Raising aspirations is about changing young peoples attitudes, building self confidence and increasing self awareness - it is about ensuring opportunities to stimulate and encourage children.
Amelie Addison, an ex pupil /world class cellist and Anne Marie Christensen, a violinist of the same calibre, performed in school yesterday.
The duo quickly built up a rapport with their young audience- they kept everyone motivated and engaged at all times. Children responded well to the music which was linked to a powerpoint presentation showing Amelie's rise to fame, from her roots in Swalwell to her performance at the Royal College of Music.
The duo not only entertained but delivered a powerful message to our pupils.
" With confidence, motivation and ambition you can be anything you want to be- do anything you want to do - be brave and follow your dream," they said.
A huge thank you to these two excellent role models for a most inspiring, enthralling and enjoyable morning.

Swalwell Primary School were one of a few schools in Gateshead chosen to take part in a Creativity Festival.
Amelia, Rida and Andrew along with Mr Hampson and Mrs Anderson were part of a presentation talking about the Robinson Crusoe project, to Head Teachers, staff and children from schools across Gateshead.
Staff and children were complimented upon how excellent thr project was. One teacher from another school said "The presentation was excellent, the children took responsibility and learned an incredible amount through first hand experience about Robinson Crusoe."
A Gateshead Inspector described the children as articulate being able to explain the impact that the project had on learning and helping to raise standards in writing and life long team skills which could be used in future employment.
Well done to all concerned-you were brilliant ambassadors for the school.

Children from many of the borough's schools were asked to perform at The Sage as part of the Gateshead Schools Dance Festival 2010. The theme was carnivals and festivals from around the world which reflects links to countries at the London 2012 olympics.
The festival has become an annual event in the Swalwell diary. Rehearsals after school culminated in a flawless performance by our pupils.
Dance is a physical activity, and it gives our children the opportunity to use imagination, improve health, boost confidence, to perform and to have fun.
The dancers were a credit to the school and should be congratulated for their hard work and commitment.
A huge thank you to Miss Scott (Rec/Y1) for organisation, support and costume design and to the students from Whickham School and Sports College for their help and guidance. Thanks also to Mrs Bovill and Miss Scott (KS2) for transporting children to and from the venue.

IMPACT THEATRE WORKSHOPS DAY

We have been lucky enough to obtain funding for Y5/6 pupils to have a full day's theatre workshop, with an evening performance for parents. Children will be filmed during the day, and in the performance, and will be presented with a copy of this on DVD for them to keep.
The workshops are going to take place on Tuesday 2nd March and will be run by Impact Universal Theatre Company, who will also be responsible for the filming. This is part of our work on raising the aspirations of pupils so that they have a greater understanding of future career paths that are available to them.
The activities will continue after school and will run right up to the performance for parents and families, which will take place at 6.00pm. The children will be able to work with real actors as well as being able to see how the film industry works....What an exciting opportunity!
We will provide sandwiches, snacks and drinks for the children after school so they do not need to come home before the performance. If you have any queries please contact Mr Hampson at your earliest convenience.

Astronauts - Mission Complete

July 9th 2009:Today 64 pupils from Swalwell School met the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery. The Astronauts arrived at Gateshead Stadium in a huge white limosine and were introduced to the crowd by Lee Archambault, the Commander of the STS-119 Shuttle. We had photographs taken with Joe( spacewalker),Tony (the aircraft pilot),Steve (mission specialist who ensures everyone is trained and procedures are followed) and John (the robotic arm operator).A movie of their exploits in space was shown and the crew commentated on the clips. They explained that the crew had gone to the International Space Station to bring hardware for solar arrays back to earth and that one astronaut who had left on the March 15th launch had remained at the station but would return home soon on the Endeavour Shuttle.
A question and answer session held by the crew proved very popular ..
Lauren Pyle asked "Did you see any Galaxies or other things in space ?"
"We saw stars etc. but to be honest it is very much like the night sky we see from telescopes at home," replied Joe.
This visit was arranged to inspire budding astronauts and to give first hand information about work in space. It encouraged us to think big and to realise that anything is possible with hard work and determination. To see how inspired our children were why not view the images in our gallery? Two of our teachers wrote the script and developed the actors whilst our key stage 1 teacher assisted with choreography. Our year 6 teacher supported the pupils with the making of props and scenery and even the daughter of our T.A got roped in to work with cheerleaders. Costumes and wardrobe was the responsibility of the key stage 2 teaching assistant. Mr Fitzpatrick, our site manager got in on the act by building a beanstalk which was second to none. Everyone in key stage 2 had a part to play and everyone who saw the production said it was one of the best yet. See photographs in the website gallery.Posted by J Anderson

Alien Day

Swalwell Primary School pupils got quite a shock when they walked into the school yard and discovered a police car waiting in the yard for them!
Pupils speculated wildly on the cause of this, but suspicions were confirmed when they entered their classrooms and were confronted by their grim teachers and a policeman, explaining the situation - ALIENS HAD INVADED DURING THE NIGHT!
It was revealed by the site manager, Mr. Fitzpatrick, that he had seen great balls of fire erupting from the school field late at night after locking the school up. All children were led up to the field and were greeted by an amazing site - a large, burnt crop circle in the middle of the grass, with a space shuttle like object placed in the middle. Police had marked the area off, and all pupils were extremely cautious, especially the forensics who had to actually touch the evidence - e.g.; pieces of skin, metal from the shuttle.
In school, many strange things had happened. In Nursery, a blue foot was found in the sandpit! A glowing egg was found in Year 3, and in Reception/Year 1 a hand was discovered! (Maybe the aliens took part in an amputation).
It soon became apparent that this was a hoax, but not before children had produced high-quality, high-tech work on the mysterious events of the day.

Year 6 Kingswood visit

Year 6 arrived at Kingswood at 11am for a full pack day of activites. After some tasty lunch the children got changed into safety gear. Strapped from head to toe the children set off to abseil down a 20ft wall. All the children were very brave and completed the task without any hesitation.
After a quick juice break both groups had to put their heads together in order to build a 6ft stand from lego which could balance 5 welllington boots.
In the evening children enjoyed sipping on some hot choco whilst singing some camp fire songs.
Finally the children got dressed for bed and were ready to keep Mrs Lancastle-Smith and Miss Busby up to 4am!
