School Meals

Swalwell Primary is partnered with Gateshead Council's catering department to deliver healthy, fresh meals to pupils every day. We have a varied choice from hot meals and baked potatoes to wraps, salad, and special diet meals.

The cost of the school meal is £2.75 for school-aged children, Year 3-6, adults £3.30, and nursery children £2.10 (September 25). Reception to Year 2 pupils are entitled to Universal Free School Meals funded by the government and is not means tested.

Help Our School – Sign Up for Free School Meals

Did you know that even if your child receives Universal Free School Meals (Reception, Year 1 & Year 2), you should still apply for Free School Meals if you’re eligible?

It’s completely free to apply
Your child still gets the same meals
The school receives extra funding to support your child’s learning

This extra funding—called Pupil Premium—helps us provide:

  • Additional teaching support
  • Learning resources
  • Enrichment activities and trips
  • Wellbeing and pastoral care

By applying, you’re not just helping your child—you’re helping the whole school community.

If you think you might be eligible (e.g. if you receive certain benefits), please apply—even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and already gets free meals.

It only takes a few minutes, and your application could make a big difference.
