AI in school

Artificial Intelligence (AI) at Swalwell Primary School

How we use AI safely and responsibly

At Swalwell Primary School, we understand that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools are becoming more common in everyday life. We believe it is important to use new technologies carefully, safely and appropriately, always putting children’s wellbeing first.

AI is never used to replace teachers or make decisions about children. Adults always remain responsible for teaching, learning and safeguarding.

What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can generate text, images or ideas based on patterns in data. Some examples include tools that help adults plan lessons or generate ideas.

How AI may be used in school

At Swalwell Primary School, staff may use AI tools to:

  • Support lesson planning and preparation
  • Generate ideas for teaching activities
  • Create draft resources, which are then checked and adapted

AI is always reviewed by staff before being used in school. Nothing is used without professional judgement.

How AI is not used

AI is not used to:

  • Make decisions about pupils
  • Assess, mark or grade children’s work independently
  • Handle safeguarding, behaviour or disciplinary matters
  • Store or process personal information about pupils or families

Teachers and school staff remain fully responsible for all decisions.

Keeping children safe

Children’s safety is our priority. Any use of technology, including AI, follows:

  • Our safeguarding policies
  • Online safety guidance
  • Data protection law

Children are not required to use AI tools, and pupils are taught age‑appropriate digital safety and critical thinking skills.

Protecting personal data

We do not enter personal information about pupils, staff or families into AI systems. Sensitive information (such as safeguarding, SEN or medical details) is never used with AI tools.

Teaching children about AI

Where appropriate, pupils may learn:

  • What AI is
  • That AI can be helpful but can also be wrong
  • Why adults check information carefully
  • How to stay safe online

This supports children’s digital literacy in an age‑appropriate way.
