Swalwell Primary School is a school at the heart of the community, catering for children aged 3 to 11 years. We currently have 152 children on roll in school and 24 children in our nursery. This means we have small classes with high staffing ratios to give children the best possible start to their education.
We are a mainstream primary school with two Additionally Resourced Mainstream School (ARMS) provisions: a 10-place Physical Disability provision and an 8-place Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) provision. Inclusion is one of the strengths of our school, and we are proud of the nurturing and supportive environment we provide for all children. We welcome applications for all year groups, subject to place availability.
Choosing the right school for your child is an important decision. We encourage prospective families to visit our school and experience our warm and welcoming environment first-hand. To arrange a tour, please contact the school office, and we will be happy to organise a visit.
Admission to the Nursery and School is in accordance with Gateshead LA policy for admissions.
Children start school at the beginning of the academic year in which they will reach the age of five. (An academic year lasts from 1 September in one year to 31 August the following year). Children born between 1 September 2022 to 31 August 2023 will be eligible to start school Reception in September 2027 and must apply for a school place by 15 January 2027.
We warmly welcome prospective families to visit our school. If you would like to arrange a tour of our Reception provision, meet our friendly staff, explore our learning environments and see first-hand how we support every child to learn, grow and thrive, please contact the school office and we will be delighted to arrange a visit for you.
The school has adopted the Primary Admissions Policy of Gateshead Council.
The Gateshead Council website contains all information relating to Reception class admissions and parents are encouraged to use the online application system to apply for a school place. Parent Portal: Home (gateshead.gov.uk)

Swalwell Primary School Nursery welcomes children from the day of their third birthday, subject to places being available.
All children are entitled to 15 hours of funded childcare per week, and eligible working families may be entitled to up to 30 hours of funded childcare per week. Parents can check their eligibility and apply for funding through the Best Start In Life — Childcare Checker.
Families who are not eligible for 30 hours funding may choose to purchase additional afternoon sessions (12:00pm-3:20pm) at a cost of £10 per session. School meals are available at an additional cost, or children may bring a packed lunch. All paid sessions must be booked and paid for in advance.
Nursery admissions are administered by the school. Parents should complete a Nursery application form and return it to the school office to be added to our waiting list. We recommend submitting an application by your child's second birthday to ensure you receive admissions information at the earliest opportunity. If your contact details change before your child's admission date, please inform the school office.
Important Information About Funding Codes
Parents wishing to access 30 hours funded childcare must provide a valid funding code and complete a parent declaration form before the end of the term prior to their child starting Nursery. Funding codes must also be revalidated and checked by the school each term to ensure funding remains in place.
For further information about Nursery admissions or funded childcare, please contact the school office on 0191 433 4000 or email swalwell@gatedu.org
If your child is currently attending a Gateshead school or a school outside Gateshead, or you are new to the country and you want to transfer your child to Swalwell Primary School, you must complete the Gateshead Council in-year transfer application via their website. You can request a school transfer up to a maximum of six weeks before the school place is needed. However, if your request is for your child to transfer school at the start of a new academic year in September, you must apply for a school place at least six weeks before the start of the summer holidays, where possible.
