Sports Premium

Please read the information below which gives details of our PE and Sport Premium Grant and how we allocate the funding.

PE & Sport Premium Funding

At Swalwell we have an ARMS unit, we are proud of the inclusivity we achieve within this subject. For example, our children enter competitions linked to Invictus games, Panathlon challenges and Paralympic festivals. This has recently been recognised through an inclusion award from the local authority.

The Government currently provides additional funding to improve provision of physical education and sport in primary schools in England – The Primary PE and Sport Premium.  This funding is ring-fenced and therefore can only be spent on provision of PE and sport in schools.  This year (2023/24) we received  £17,310.

We must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of our physical education (PE), physical activity and sport provision.  This means that we should use the premium to:

  • develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that we provide
  • build capacity and capability to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

Specifically, we should use the premium to secure improvements in the following 5 key indicators:

  1. Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity
  2. Profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
  3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  5. Increased participation in competitive sport

Accountability & Online Reporting

We are accountable for the use of the PE and Sport Premium funding allocated and are expected to spend the grant for the purpose it was provided only – to make additional and sustainable improvements to our PE, sport and physical activity provision.   We must publish details of how we have spent our PE and sport premium funding by the end of the summer term (July 31st).  Specifically, we must detail:

  • the amount of premium received
  • a full breakdown of how it has been spent
  • the impact on pupils’ PE, physical activity, and sport participation and attainment
  • how the improvements will be sustainable in the future
  • the percentage of pupils within our year 6 cohort who met the national curriculum requirement to:
    • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
    • use a range of strokes effectively
    • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

To meet the accountability requirements attached to this funding we have developed a school specific planning/reporting template (aligned to DfE & afPE guidance).  Our PE & Sport Premium report for the 2023/2024 academic year can be viewed below. We will publish our action plan for the academic year 2024-25 in the Autumn term. We regularly update this document throughout the year.  This ensures a process of ongoing self-evaluation, enabling us to maximise the impact of this funding.
